About the Artist
Phyllis Furdell has been painting portraits for ‘many’ years, combining careers as an artist and as a professional project manager, researcher, and writer in the fields of economic development, urban poverty and workforce issues, before her retirement. Primarily a self-taught artist, she has studied with the late Rhoda Lurie Fried and George Palmer of Buffalo, NY; Danni Dawson and Diane Tessler of the Art League School of Fine Art in Alexandria, VA; and taken workshops from renowned pastel artists Daniel Green and Albert Handel. She has taught classes in portraiture, drawing, and pastels for the Arlington County Adult Education Program.
Ms. Furdell has received numerous awards and recognition for her “Metroscapes” series of paintings depicting scenes on Washington, DC’s subway system. She has had one-person shows at several prominent galleries in Virginia and Maryland. Her portraits and urban scenes hang in many states across the country from California and New Mexico to Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania, and in England, Canada, Australia and Spain. Her paintings are part of many permanent collections, including the collections of the American Bankers’ Association, the National League of Cities, Trados Corporation, the Washington, DC, Commission on the Arts “Art in Public Places” program, and the permanent collection of the Wilson Building, Washington’s city hall.
